The consulting division is the largest division of PBG. We undergo semester-long consulting projects with a diverse set of companies within the biotech and healthcare sectors. We work with diverse range of companies from startups to Big Pharma to Private Equity Firms and everything between. Typically these consulting projects run 10 weeks during the spring and fall semesters. The teams are typically staffed with one project manager and four other team members from different backgrounds and graduate schools within Penn.
Working on a PBG project
Doing a PBG project is a great opportunity to gain real world consulting experience or just view your previous studies through a different lense. In an increasingly competitive job market, being able to talk about your experience during PBG projects can give you an edge.
Team members can expect to commit on average 5-10 hours per week toward their project. Project managers can expect closer to 10 hours per week. The weekly commitment can fluctuate based on the needs of the client. Most of our members find this commitment very feasible on top of their previous time commitments.
You must be a PBG member to view and apply for projects. You can learn more about becoming a member here. At the beginning of each semester, you will be able to view and apply for projects through our website member sign in. Once logged in, further instructions will be provided.
We have had a wide mix of clients in past PBG projects, including well-known multinational companies as well as small startups.
No, but you will have an opportunity to learn new skills and gain business experience, which will be very helpful for your career development. In addition, many consulting firms are familiar with PBG and actively seek to recruit our members.
Working with PBG as a client
We offer clients an excellent opportunity for getting an informed and practical external perspective on solving a key issue that your organization may be facing. Teams are comprised of students from all schools at Penn, providing a unique mix of strong business, legal, medical, scientific, and engineering knowledge based on your organization’s needs. Because of the diverse knowledge base, working with PBG can be a fantastic opportunity for getting an informed and practical external perspective to help solve a key issue that your organization may be facing.
As a not-for-profit student organization, you are not billed for our services. However, we do ask for a donation to our group to mark a job well done. This will go towards our social and networking events as well as administrative and other costs for our organization.
Our projects occur during the fall and spring semesters. As a client, you should expect to meet with the team once every two weeks (either in person or by phone/teleconference.) In the beginning of the project, you will define scope of the project together with the team leader. Typically PBG teams deliver a mid-project deliverable and then a final deliverable, though this may vary depending on the project.
The goal of PBG’s careers division is the provide our members with opportunities to network both within our organization and with professionals and recruiters within the biotech and healthcare space.
PBG sponsors and hosts a number of networking events to give our members an opportunity to socialize with professionals not only in the consulting field, but also biotech/pharma, medical writing, patent law, and others.
To help the professional development of our members, we hold a number of workshops on subjects ranging from simple resume workshops to how to conduct primary and secondary research. Much of this training can assist our members participating in consulting projects through our consulting division, though you need not be staffed on a project to attend these sessions.
